Furniture

If a table wobbles because of a short leg, put a small amount of Plastic Wood on waxed paper. Set the short leg on it and allow it to dry. Trim what a sharp knife and smooth with sandpaper.

Sticky dresser drawers will slide easily again if you rub candle wax or soap on the runner.

Nails, Screws & Bolts

Protect your wall from crumbling when you drive in a nail or hook by masking the spot with an X of two strips of tape.

You can protect the wall or board when pulling nails with a claw hammer by putting a small piece of wood or a plastic spatula behind the hammer.

When hammering a small brad, tack, or nail, hold it in place with the teeth of a pocket comb. This saves thumbs and fingers from the pain of the hammer.

To fill small nail holes without painting, mix kitchen-cleaning powder with paint and use this compound to fill the holes.

If a screw hole in the wall has been stripped, soak a cotton ball with Elmer's glue and gently push the entire cotter ball into the hole. Allow it to dry at least 24 hours. Then gently insert the screw with a screwdriver.

If your screw is loose ~ try one of these possible solutions.

1. Stick a wooden match in the screw hole and break it off. Then replace the screw.

2. Wind a few strands of steel wood around the threads of the screw before replacing it.

3. Paint the screw of a loose drawer knob with fingernail polish before inserting it. When the polish dries, it will hold tightly.

4. Dip the screw in putty or glue before inserting it.

Pictures

Posters and lightweight pictures may be hung with toothpaste. You won't leave nail holes and it's easy to clean off.

To determine where a picture hook should go, lay your picture face down and cut a paper pattern of the backside. Now pull the wire taut, as it will be when the picture is hung and mark on the pattern the V point of the wire. Remove the pattern, position it on the wall where you want the picture and drive a hook through the mark on the pattern. Remove the pattern and hang your picture.

Painting

If you don't want to clean your paintbrush because you'll need it again tomorrow, wrap the brush in cellophane wrap and place it in the freezer.

Hinges and other hardware can be protected from paint be coating them with petroleum jelly before painting adjacent areas.

After cleaning paint brushes, rinse them in fabric softener to keep them soft as new.

Plastering

You can slow down the hardening process when mixing plaster by substituting vinegar for about 1/4 of the water called for.

To fill large cracks in walls or woodwork, first stuff them with steel wool, then finish with Spackle or joint compound.

Miscellaneous

To remove old decals or bumper stickers, coat with white vinegar, let it soak in, and wipe them off.

To loosen a stubborn lock, dip key into machine oil or graphite. If you have no graphite, rub the key with a lead pencil. Turn the key in the lock a few times.

If a light bulb is badly broken and removing it presents a problem, try jamming a large potato into the broken class. Turn the bulb by turning the potato.

Carpet is a good acoustical cover for walls. Use the self-stick squares or use double-sided tape to hold broadloom carpet on the walls.

To prevent plywood from splitting when you're sawing, place a strip of masking tape at the point where you will cut.

To keep nylon cords from fraying, shellac the ends of the rope. The cut end may also be heated over a small flame.

Mt. San Antonio College Electronics Professor Harry M. Smith was recently awarded the prestigious Allan H. Maxwell Memorial Award by the California Council of Electronics Instructors (CCEI) at its fall conference held at the College of San Mateo.

The statewide award recognizes CCEI members' outstanding contributions in electronics instruction.

Smith, an electronics professor at Mt. SAC since 1987, has served as the advisor to the college's Skills USA Club for the past eight years, preparing students for regional, state and national competitions in skills areas such as electronics, drafting, and computer maintenance. Each year, Mt. SAC vocational students advance to the national competition, winning four national medals in the past four years including a bronze medal in electronics technology this year.

Professor Smith served as Chairman of the Electronics Department at Mt. San Antonio College before retiring to Surprise Arizona. Before coming to Mt. SAC, he taught at Glendora High School.

Harry M. Smith of Mt. San Antonio College is the recipient of the 2005 Allan H. Maxwell Award.

Harry Smith graduated Reseda High School in Woodland Hills, CA in January of 1962. He entered Pasadena Nazarene College (now known as Point Loma University) as a freshman the following year starting his general education. In September of 1964, Harry and his beautiful high school sweetheart Cecile Adams were married in Reseda; CA.

Harry continued his education at Pasadena City College, where he found his love for Industrial Arts and electronics.

After graduating from PCC with his A.S. degree, and with encouragement from his wife and family, Harry enrolled in the Industrial Arts program at Cal. State L.A. (Now known as, California State University, Los Angeles.) This program allowed him to get his teaching credential with his B.A.

Harry started teaching electronics full-time at Glendora High School in the fall of 1970.

Harry took several years off from his teaching career during the years of 1980 to 1986. During that time he was manager of the graphics arts facility at Christian Chapel in Walnut, manager of the graphics program at the Evangelical Free Church in Fullerton, and owner/operator of his own printing business in La Puente, California.

Harry has been active with CCEI for twelve years. He was invited by Ken Hanson to be on the Board, and agreed to accept the position of Secretary to the Board. On several occasions he has been responsible for organizing the CCEI Conference held at Mt. San Antonio College.

Harry has been active in SkillsUSA for many years with his students winning many gold medals at state competitions, and several bringing home medals from the national competitions.

When Harry started working with the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, his responsibility was limited to chaperoning the Mt. SAC students to the regional, state and national competitions. Then in 1999, he was appointed to the position of Regional Coordinator for Los Angeles County (Region 3) and was later joined by his brother, Herb Smith, in coordinating the annual SkillsUSA Conference at Cal State University, Los Angeles.
